Are your hydrangeas typically as blue as you would like them? If you are like most of the customers that walk through our door, your answer is a resounding “No.” The good news is that hydrangeas, unlike most plants, can dramatically change in color! You can even change a pink hydrangea into a blue one and vice versa (white hydrangeas cannot change). Where else can you exude so much creative power in the garden?
Here’s the secret:
In order to get that deep blue color in your favorite hydrangea you have to act now. Fall is the time to apply a product with aluminum sulfate and start the process of changing the color (trust me, I have tried at other times of year and it is an uphill battle). Hydra Blue is our product of choice for accomplishing this goal. It’s easy - you simply put the Hydra Blue at the base of your plant once a month from October through Decmeber and water it in. Next, you let nature take its course throughout the rest of winter and enjoy beautiful blue flowers next spring!
We have a full display of Hydra Blue at our outdoor Garden Shop, so come on down and get started before it is too late!

Watsonia
Native to South Africa, watsonia is commonly called bugle flower. It makes a great cut flower with long, graceful spikes of fragrant blooms. Full sun and well drained soil is preferred. Watsonia will grow to 3-4 feet in height and looks best in the garden when allowed to mature into sizable clumps. Red, orange, pink and white watsonia bulbs are currently in stock and can be planted anytime over the next two months.
|
Zantedeschia aethiopica
Also from South Africa, zantedeschia aethiopica is known as the common garden calla lily. Plants form large clumps of semi-evergreen long-stalked shiny green leaves with elegantly tapered white blooms and can reach 4 feet in height. ‘Green Goddess’ is a unique variety with white flowers tipped in green. The plants do best in moist, even boggy soil and full sun to light shade in hotter climates. We have large 14/16 size bulbs of both the all white and ‘Green Goddess’ in stock now.

Clover-Shaped Pulp Pots
Last year we used these cute, inexpensive pots for container plantings at the end of the fall bulb season. They looked so nice, this year we are also offering them for sale. The number of bulbs needed per pot depends on the type and variety of bulb used. As an example, expect the small clover pot to hold 7-8 narcissus or 10 hyacinth bulbs. Plant the bulbs close together, but not touching for the best results. Once planted and given an initial watering, the pots can be left outdoors until spring. When the bulbs sprout in early spring make sure to water them as necessary. The reward will be a pot of beautiful blooms that can be placed anywhere for a bit of springtime cheer.

As the season draws to a close we are selectively paring down our pottery inventory. It is not too late to take advantage of this opportunity to buy some pots at attractive discounts.
The Burnham Planter (shown here) is one of the pots currently on sale at 50% off. A beehive style planter with a soft green glaze, it is available in 3 sizes while supplies last. This soft green is a perfect complement to flowers in pastel shades, whites, bright blues or deep purples.

Cover cropping is a fundamental technique used in many gardens that seek to be sustainable. Cover crops are fast-growing annual or perennial plants that are grown for the purpose of suppressing weeds, stopping erosion and attracting beneficial insects. Cover crops are typically mowed down and turned into the soil while flowering and before they have gone to seed, adding organic material and, in the case of leguminous plants, nitrogen, to the soil. Sometimes cover crops are left in place for more than one season, for continued weed suppression and erosion control.
For the quickest coverage, consider annual grasses, such as barley or ryegrass. To add nitrogen, choose nitrogen fixing leguminous plants, such as clover, fava beans or vetch. To combine quick coverage with nitrogen fixation, select a blend, such as our Gold Rush Blend or Green to Gold Blend. Gold Rush Blend is a single-season mix of barley, brome grass, and crimson clover. 2 1/2 lbs covers 800 square feet. Green to Gold Blend provides up to three years of weed suppression and erosion control with a blend of brome grass, fescue and rose clover. 2 1/2 lbs covers 2,000 square feet.
With the weather still warm and fall rains just starting, right now is the best time to plant cover crops. Drop by and let a nursery professional help you choose just the right cover crop for your needs.
