Written by a team of respected horticulturists, this book provides a comprehensive guide to native plants that is supplemented with 450 color photographs. Topics of design and plant care are covered as well, as is a recommended list of public gardens where California native plants can be viewed. Another fine book is East Bay Municipal Utility District’s Plants and Landscapes for Summer Dry Climates. This award-winning book is an excellent resource for plant and design suggestions for drought-tolerant gardens. If you are planning to make your garden more water-wise, this book provides information on more than 650 native Californian and Mediterranean plants suited to the various microclimates of the San Francisco Bay Area. It also includes information on maintenance and water conservation in a well-organized format. The text is supplemented by beautiful photographs, making it both enjoyable and educational to read. Create a fresh look in your garden by adding some new pottery to showcase your plants. Spring pottery deliveries have started to arrive at Orchard. Come in to browse the nursery’s constantly changing selection of pots. Interesting and unique new styles are now on display, and there are more to come. In addition, well-priced Malaysian glazed pottery in standard styles and a variety of colors is always available, as is a large selection of classic terra cotta pots.
Feeling burnt out lately? What better way to unwind and decompress from the hectic pace of life then to spend some time out in the garden (especially with the gorgeous California springtime)! But of all of the ways to enjoy the peaceful serenity of your yard, weeding is usually not one of them… That is why we at Orchard Nursery recommend putting down a thick layer of mulch throughout your entire yard. Mulching is one of the best, if not the best, ways to create a low maintenance and worry-free yard. Putting down a 2-inch layer of mulch will suppress those pesky weeds and prevent new ones from germinating. Now is the time to get a “head start” before they get the best of your garden and become too difficult to manage. It may seem like an intimidating job, but I promise that you will be rewarded handsomely for your efforts and that your back will thank you later in the season! Beyond weed control, mulching will also maintain even temperatures in the ground and will help to retain moisture in the soil as the weather warms up. This is particularly important as we are all trying to save water this year. As our nursery manager Peter says, “Mulch is the ‘secret weapon’ of water conservation in the garden.” We at Orchard want you to be successful in all of your gardening endeavors and for it to be an easy and enjoyable experience. That is why we are heartily recommending that you mulch your yard, and to that end, we are running a promotion on Gold Rush (one of our favorite mulches). Through the end of March, it is “Buy 3 bags, get 1 bag free”. Master Nursery Gold Rush is $9.99 for a 2 cu ft bag. Gold Rush is a finely ground fir bark mulch with 15% chicken manure. It is a fantastic choice for mulching or as an amendment in the ground. I personally love products that have multiple uses, and I tend to recommend Gold Rush for perennial shrubs and trees. I choose it for these scenarios because the fir bark is a slow decomposer and will help keep the clay soil “loose” for longer. Whether you are using it to prepare the soil for planting some new shrubs, or mulching around some established trees as I did last week, you can’t go wrong with Gold Rush. Just remember that you truly need a 2 to 3 inch layer to really maximize the benefits listed above, and make sure to keep the main stem or crown of the plant uncovered so the plants can breathe. So make your summer gardening more pleasurable by taking the time to mulch now. Your plants will thank you for it and you will be very happy you did! |
