Dr Earth

Gardner & Bloome
Master Nursery Paydirt

E. B. Stone Tomato & Vegetable Food
is formulated from quality natural organic ingredients for use throughout the vegetable garden as well as with soft fruits like strawberries. It will contribute to even plant growth without producing excessive foliage at the expense of fruit. The additional phosphorous helps to ensure the production of high quality fruits and vegetables. The calcium in our Tomato & Vegetable fertilizer aids in preventing disorders like blossom end rot and helps to correct acidic soil conditions. For superior produce, use our Flower & Vegetable Planting Mix with native soil when preparing your beds.

· Contrast your table linen with your flowers for a dramatic effect.
· Jewel tones add richness.
· A little purple mixed with the traditional oranges, rusts and burgundy colors looks smashing!
· If your table is very long, maybe a few smaller arrangements intermixed with mini pumpkins and candles would be fitting.
· Bringing in fabrics or china pieces that you would like us to complement is welcomed.
· Be sure to water your arrangement carefully and frequently to keep your arrangement fresh. Be sure the container is dry before returning it to the table.

Furniture at Christmas

Christmas is fast approaching and Outdoor Furniture makes the perfect gift that can be enjoyed by the entire family for many years to come. Now is a great time to take advantage of our on going End-of-Season clearance. We still have an excellent selection of dining sets in teak, wrought iron, extruded and cast aluminum, as well as outdoor wicker. Many of these sets offer alternative table tops such as natural stone, faux stone or cast aluminum.

We also have sofas, loveseats and lounge chairs in a variety of materials which can enhance your outdoor living spaces or are equally beautiful as durable indoor pieces. Why not consider investing in that special piece, like an Italian hand-painted volcanic stone bistro table or a beautiful teak bench for the garden? Surprise your loved one with that great rocking chair.

Whatever your choice, you will find the highest quality product and service here at Orchard Nursery.

Alliums

Allium Hair
Alliums, commonly known as Ornamental Onions, are available in a wide range of sizes and colors. From 1 foot tall to 4 feet tall, from blue or green to purples or pinks, there is an Allium for every garden. The ornamental Alliums belong to the same family as onions, garlic, leeks and shallots; this makes them deer and rodent resistant.

Allium Giganteum
Alliums will grow in any average soil, doing even better in rich, well-drained soil. To achieve a successful visual effect, 10 to 15 small bulbs or 3 to 5 larger bulbs should be planted close together. Alliums prefer to be dry in their dormancy. Plant bulbs in low-growing plantings, where other plants will help to hide their often untidy foliage.

Allium Caeruleum
Do you prefer rare and unusual flowers? Try the exotic Allium Hair. Do you want a show-stopping garden? Try Allium Giganteum. (The ball shaped flower consists of more than 100 little flowers and has a diameter of at least 8 inches!) Are you always looking for a true blue flower? Try Allium caeruleum ‘Azureum’ with its unique sky-blue umbels. We have over a dozen varieties of Alliums in stock. Whichever you choose, Alliums naturalize well in our Mediterranean climate, bringing years of colorful and unique beauty to your garden.

Recipe of the Week: Ham & Corn Chowder

What You'll Need:

  • 4 cups fresh or frozen corn
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 or 2 large onions, chopped
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 cups chopped sweet green, red and/or yellow pepper
  • 2 tbsp. fresh or dried marjoram leaves, minced
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. white pepper
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4-6 tbsp. flour
  • 2 cups cooked lower-sodium ham, cut into bite-size pieces

Step by Step:

In a large saucepan, combine corn, chicken broth, onion, potatoes, green pepper, marjoram, salt and white pepper.

Bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes or until potatoes are almost tender, stirring occasionally.

In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and flour (more flour for thicker soup). Stir into the corn mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes or until thickened and bubbly.

Stir in the ham and cook for 5 minutes or more until heated through.

Yield: 8 servings
