E. B. Stone Tomato & Vegetable Food
is formulated from quality natural organic ingredients for use throughout the vegetable garden as well as with soft fruits like strawberries. It will contribute to even plant growth without producing excessive foliage at the expense of fruit. The additional phosphorous helps to ensure the production of high quality fruits and vegetables. The calcium in our Tomato & Vegetable fertilizer aids in preventing disorders like blossom end rot and helps to correct acidic soil conditions. For superior produce, use our Flower & Vegetable Planting Mix with native soil when preparing your beds.

Quotation of the Week:

"For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad."

It’s Cymbidium Season!

Cymbidium orchids have been a symbol of virtuosity and friendship in China for centuries, it only takes one look to know why, they’re naturally beautiful, Cymbidiums are surprisingly easy to care for. Their generous abundance of leaves stay green all year and give them lush appearance not found in many orchids. Cymbidiums grow best in containers making them perfect for patios, porches and decks and can be left outside all year (see care). Tall elegant flower stalks are long lasting and make excellent cut flowers as well. They are available in standard and miniature varieties and come in a wide range of colors. Perfect for gift giving, in Asian culture it is considered an honor to give or receive a cymbidium.
Cymbidiums can be brought into the house to enjoy the blooms, be sure the buds are at least mature and close to opening, as the temperature change can cause the underdeveloped buds to drop.
Care:
Light:
Cymbidiums should be grown outside, in morning or late afternoon sun. They should be protected from the hottest mid day sun as well as cold temperatures. Although they can tolerate temperatures as low as 28˚ for short periods, plants should be protected from a hard frost, by keeping them under an over hang or covered with frost cloth.
Water:
Water thoroughly when dry and let drain, they should never be allowed to set in standing water.
Fertilizer:
Fertilize every other time you water with a balanced fertilizer such as “Miracle Gro” (15-30-15) or Grow More Premium Orchid Food (20-20-20). Never fertilize a dry plant, only when your plant is well hydrated.
Repotting:
Cymbidiums should be repotted when the “bulbs” completely fill the pot and after they are finished blooming, usually after March. A repotting instruction sheet can be picked up in the Flower Shop.
Visit the Flower Shop and take in the splendor of these magnificent plants. Let one of knowledgeable sales staff help you choose the perfect specimen to take home and see how easy it is to grow.

NOVEMBER
Tip of the week
The first rain has fallen. Soon we will all have unwanted guests as rodents and ants move indoors to forage out of the winter weather. To keep household pest populations from ruining your holiday festivities we suggest an early application of baits and traps to yank the welcome mat out from under the little critters. In addition to the old fashioned (but reliable) traps and baits, Orchard Nursery carries RODETROL a non-toxic corn oil concentrate that disrupts rodents ability to absorb water but is safe for pets and people, and BIOGANIC with food-grade oils of sesame, cloves and thyme to clean ants out of the kitchen before the party guests arrive.

Dress up your entry way, deck or patio with beautiful pots from around the world.

Plant your winter vegetables or herbs in a pot from our lovely selection of single or multi-color glazed Chinese planters. Give your camellia, azalea, or rhododendron a new home in one of our rustic "old stone" pots, brought to you directly from Vietnam. If you are looking for something with a more modern look, our polished Terrazo pots with their sharp lines and dark color add an elegant and finished look to any area. And of course, we always have traditional Italian clay in all sizes and shapes, along with the thick, simple Terrasia clay collection from China.
All of our outdoor pots are frost resistant.

Monterey SLUGGO

Now that the first rain has fallen, an early application of bait is essential to keep the slug and snail population under control. A pre-emptive strike will prevent later damage this winter.
For those of you with children or pets, we encourage the use of Monterey SLUGGO. The active ingredient is iron sulfate, which devastates snails but is safe for other animals and birds. Any not consumed biodegrades into a fertilizer. The bait will draw slugs and snails out of hiding and remains effective after rain or irrigation.
Apply one pound of SLUGGO to 1,000 square feet. It is available in a 1 lb. shaker can ($9.99), 2.5 lb. ($19.99), 5 lb. ($34.99) and 10 lb. ($55.00) jugs.

ASPCA Disaster Relief Fund and the Canine Companions for Independence

A BIG THANKS to all our customers and employees who donated to the ASPCA Disaster Relief Fund and the Canine Companions for Independence.
We collected $386.00 and on Monday the 31st of October sent checks to the two organizations. We hope you all enjoyed the time spent at the Ol’ Fishing Hole. Maybe we can get that splashing fish to come back sometime. Last we heard, he was heading for the Bahamas for a warm winter.

In addition, we gave 338 flu shots and 30 pneumonia shots. The proceeds went to Sutter VNA and Hospice. Thank you for your support.
