So there it is on the shelf, that beautiful packet of sunflower seeds and you start to envision warm sunny days, dinner outdoors with the family and a beautiful bouquet fresh from your garden as the centerpiece. So you grab a packet of seeds and off to your garden you go...there's just one catch, it's the middle of January and it's 34 degrees outside!
Most nurseries and garden centers carry seeds for the entire year and display them all at once; however, as seeds vary, so do their sowing times.
To help clarify when certain varieties needs sowing, below is a list of ornamental annuals, biennials and perennials and when they should be sown. There are cool season annuals and warm season annuals; you will notice that some plants can be sown in both spring and fall in our mild winter (usually!) areas.
