So there it is on the shelf, that beautiful packet of sunflower seeds and you start to envision warm sunny days, dinner outdoors with the family and a beautiful bouquet fresh from your garden as the centerpiece. So you grab a packet of seeds and off to your garden you go...there's just one catch, it's the middle of January and it's 34 degrees outside! Most nurseries and garden centers carry seeds for the entire year and display them all at once; however, as seeds vary, so do their sowing times. To help clarify when certain varieties needs sowing, below is a list of ornamental annuals, biennials and perennials and when they should be sown. There are cool season annuals and warm season annuals; you will notice that some plants can be sown in both spring and fall in our mild winter (usually!) areas. Seeds that should be sown directly in the ground in late winter (Jan - Feb):
Seeds that should be sown directly in the ground in early spring (Feb - March):
Seeds that should be sown directly in the ground in mid to late spring (April - May):
Seeds that should be sown directly in the ground in fall (Oct. - Dec.):
Remember that in our mild climate area we can sow seeds a little earlier than what is recommended on the seed packet. So if you want to purchase all your seeds at once, go ahead and stock up, but remember that without a greenhouse your warm season annuals will sit and sulk if sown in the middle of winter! Primrose (Primula) If you are looking for color in your garden from fall through winter, then primroses are what you want. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Primroses can be planted in containers or in the ground. Primroses look best when planted in clusters or used in borders as they grow in clumps that will eventually spread. Here are some of the varieties that we carry: Primula acaulis – (English primrose) 4 to 6 inches tall with 1 - 2 1/2 inch flowers. Primula polyantha - 8 to 10 inches tall. Vigorous, compact plants with huge 2 1/2 inch flowers on strong heavy stems. Primula malacoides - 8 to 12 inches tall. Compact and uniform plants bloom early with large, dense flower clusters. Primroses are easy-to-grow annuals that like cool, moist locations with dappled sunlight. Keep them well watered and fertilized with a liquid fertilizer. We recommend Dr. Earth Liquid Solution every three weeks to encourage non-stop blossoms.

Citrus plants give use shades of fiery oranges, bold yellows, and glossy greens, and yielding flavors that are sweet and sour, tart and tangy, fresh and sassy. Once you start to incorporate them into your cooking you’ll want more and more! Here are some uses that illustrate how chefs use citrus to bring a little zing to your palate. 1. Adds flavor and texture to cuisine. Spanning a wide range of tastes and textures, citrus offers a simple way to spruce up almost any plate. 2. Brings balance to dishes. Varying levels of sugar and acid allows citrus fruits to help balance flavors of all sorts. Sauces served with seafood are typical examples, but the same formula works with fowl, beef, vegetable, and lamb dishes. 3. Provides a healthy alternative. Citrus can pick up the slack for flavors in dishes when less healthful ingredients are eliminated. 4. Cleanses the palate. With their pure fresh taste, citrus juices act as palate cleansers. 5. Promotes simplicity. Citrus brings enough color and flavor to allow a chef to use fewer ingredients to make entrees more straightforward. 6. Pairs well with wines. In some preparations, citrus is a better complement to wine than other ingredients. 7. Has a tenderizing effect on meat. Not only tenderizes the meat but gives it a nice citrus flavor.
